The Battle of Nibley Green, 1470 - painting by Graham Turner The Battle of Nibley Green Ref: GT-NG

The crisis of 1469-71 left a vacuum at the top as Edward IV and the Earl of Warwick fought over their differences, giving those slightly lower in the hierarchy the opportunity to try to settle their own scores.

The long running inheritance dispute between William, Lord Berkeley, and the Talbot family was one such disagreement to boil over into violence, when Thomas Talbot, Viscount Lisle, lost patience with the proceedings in the law courts and challenged Berkeley to combat. The two nobles and their armed retainers met early in the morning of 20th March 1470 at Nibley Green in Gloucestershire, for what would be the last private battle fought on English soil.

In the ensuing encounter Lisle was killed by an arrow in his face as his force advanced down Shankley Hill towards Berkeley's position on the edge of Michaelwood - the deciding moment in the battle, pictured by Graham Turner in his painting.

Right - This large solitary oak was once surrounded by many others before Michaelwood was reduced in size, so its younger self possibly witnessed the events of 1470. Graham has based the tree in his painting on this remarkable survivor, repositioning it to the edge of the wood.
