Royal gunners open fire at the start of the battle of Bosworth from their position in front of the Duke of Norfolk's division. Behind the guns and archers can be seen Norfolk himself, his banner and standard flying above him. Other banners include (from left to right) Norfolk's son, the Earl of Surrey, Thomas, Lord D'Acre, John Touchet, Lord Audley, and Richard, Lord Fitzhugh, while to the right of Norfolk's banners are those of Ralph, Lord Greystoke, Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers, and John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln. Wearing the white tabard with black interlaced chevrons Sir Robert Brackenbury - in charge of the artillery - gives a message to one of the king's retainers.

Richard III at Bosworth - print from a painting by Graham Turner Richard III Fights for his Crown Ref: Gic-G335

Having killed Henry Tudor's standard bearer and felled Sir John Cheyney, King Richard III wields his battle-axe against some of Sir William Stanley's red-jacketed retainers. Behind the king, knights of his household who charged into the fray alongside him struggle to get near Henry Tudor - the banners of Sir James Harrington and Sir Robert Percy can be identified, and Sir Richard Ratcliffe is seen being pulled from his horse.

To the right Rhys ap Thomas approaches, and Rhys Fawr ap Maredudd picks up the fallen red dragon standard - and behind them Henry Tudor himself can be seen, surrounded by his bodyguard and provocatively displaying the royal arms alongside banners of St George and the Dun Cow of Warwick.
