Sir Francis Lovell, 1st Viscount Lovell - Original painting by Graham Turner Sir Francis Lovell, 1st Viscount Lovell - original painting Ref: GT-LO

Born in 1456, Francis Lovell spent some of his formative years in the care of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick - the 'Kingmaker' - quite probably in the company of King Edward IV's young brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Lovell would become a staunch supporter of Gloucester, and was knighted by him after their expedition to Scotland in 1481, made viscount in 1483, and after Richard acceded to the throne, he became Lord Chamberlain and a Knight of the Garter. Following the Battle of Bosworth he escaped to fight for the Yorkist cause for the last time at the Battle of Stoke in 1487, after which he vanished, his end shrouded in mystery.

Graham Turner's painting shows Sir Francis wearing armour based primarily on memorial brasses of the 1480s, his helmet being notable as an early close helm, inspired by those preserved in the churches of St. Mary's, Bury St. Edmunds, and All Saints, Godshill, on the Isle of White, while other examples can be seen in the Royal Armouries and depicted in art of the period.

Gouache painting by Graham Turner - figure size approximately 8"x 13" (20 x 33cm) on larger sheet of watercolour board.
