Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury - print from a painting by Graham Turner Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury Ref: KS7-19

Richard Neville was born in 1400, the son of Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland, and Joan Beaufort. Knighted in 1420, he gained his title through his wife Alice, only daughter of Thomas Montacute (Montagu), Earl of Salisbury, when he died in 1428. In 1436 he was created a Knight of the Garter, and he would go on to play a significant role in the early stages of the Wars of the Roses. His family's struggle for regional dominance against the Percys caused considerable unrest in the north, boiling over into outright violence on several occasions, and this pushed him and his son, Richard, Earl of Warwick, into their alliance with the Duke of York - who was married to Salisbury's sister Cecily - creating the foundations of the Yorkist faction.

Salisbury fought alongside York at the first battle of the Wars of the Roses at St Albans in 1455, and was again victorious at Blore Heath in 1459 when his army was intercepted on their way to rendezvous with York and Warwick at Ludlow. He and York would however run out of luck at the Battle of Wakefield in December 1460 - Salisbury was captured alive and taken to Pontefract Castle where 'the common people of the country, which loved him not, took him out of the castle by violence and smote off his head'. His head would join those of York and York's son the Earl of Rutland over Micklegate Bar, a main gateway into the city of York. Salisbury's son Thomas was also among the dead at Wakefield, but his other son Warwick would go on to play a central part in the events to come.

Graham Turner portrays Richard Neville in his later years, wearing an armour of the period and accompanied by his banner-bearer. The banner displays the arms on his preserved stall plate at the Order of the Garter's home at Windsor, quartering the Neville saltire with the arms of Montacute and Monthermer, the titles he gained by right of his wife.

Reproduced on good quality slightly textured paper from a gouache painting by Graham Turner (The paper is very similar in appearance to the watercolour paper the original was painted on).
