WW2 RAF Fighter Pilot painting HMS Glorious Ref: GT-RAF4

A Royal Air Force Hurricane of 46 Squadron prepares to land on the deck of HMS Glorious on the 7th June 1940, having flown from a land base in Norway during the evacuation of British Forces there. These aircraft landed successfully despite having no tail hooks, carrying sandbags in their tails to allow heavier breaking on landing.

This success was followed by tragedy the following day, when HMS Glorious was attacked and sunk by the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau with a loss of over 1200 men - almost the whole ship's complement.
