Battle over Frankfurt - original painting from the Osprey book Battle of Berlin 1943-44 by Graham Turner Battle over Frankfurt Ref: GT-11C

Although Berlin was the focus of the bombing campaign during this period, raids on other targets continued to be made to keep plans unpredictable. Here, during a raid on Frankfurt on 20th December 1943, 103 Squadron Lancaster Mk III JB-454, piloted by Flight Sergeant H.S. Rathbone, has been attacked by the Junkers Ju 88C-6 of 1/HJG-2 piloted by OFw R. Winn, the Lancaster's fuselage raked down the right-hand side, setting an engine on fire. However, return fire from the rear-gunner has hit the port engine of the German aircraft. The Lancaster would crash 10 miles from Frankfurt, resulting in four crewmen being killed and three made POW.
