25th April 1464

In mid-April 1464 John Neville, Lord Montagu, was despatched to the border to escort Scottish envoys to peace talks in York. He managed to avoid an ambush laid by Sir Humphrey Neville, but then found his way blocked by a Lancastrian force at Hedgeley Moor on or around 25th April.

The Lancastrian army included the Duke of Somerset, Lords Roos and Hungerford, Sir Ralph Percy and Sir Ralph Grey. Details are scarce, but Sir Ralph Percy, seen here, was 'manfully slain', along with many of his retinue, seemingly abandoned by his comrades who made their escape. Legend has it that two boulders mark the spot where Percy made his final leap having received his death blow, and a roadside memorial marks this spot.
