The Battle of Towton - Canvas Print The Battle of Towton - Canvas Print Ref: G163-XLC

With the wind and driving snow at their backs, the Yorkist archers shoot their final deadly volleys of armour piercing arrows into the advancing Lancastrian army while Edward IV and his knights and men-at-arms move through the ranks to meet their oncoming foe.

Graham Turner's large scale oil painting captures the bitter conditions on that bleak Yorkshire plateau during the opening stages of what would become the biggest and bloodiest battle fought on British soil.

Individually printed on good quality canvas before being stretched on wooden stretcher bars - just like the original oil painting - and then varnished for protection.

Note that canvas prints have no white border - this is the overall size of the canvas on its wooden stretcher bars and the image extends to the edge.

Each canvas is individually signed (on the reverse, as there is no border) by the artist, Graham Turner.

The Medieval Art of Graham Turner

The series of battles fought between the rival Yorkist and Lancastrian claiments to the English throne during the second half of the 15th century are now known as the Wars of the Roses, after badges carried by supporters of the two factions - the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster.

Political tensions erupted into open conflict at the first battle of ST.ALBANS in 1455, when the Duke of York took up arms against the Lancastrian King Henry VI, and this battle is one of several that Graham Turner has brought to life in his series of paintings devoted to this turbulent period in our history. WAKEFIELD, TOWTON, NORTHAMPTON, BARNET, TEWKESBURY, and BOSWORTH - where Henry Tudor defeated Richard III - these are some of the other battles that have been painted by this highly regarded historical artist who specialises in medieval history, all of which are available as prints from Studio 88.
