THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH - 22nd August 1485

When Richard III succeeded his brother, Edward IV, in 1483, he found his throne threatened by the Lancastrian Henry Tudor, who was then exiled in France. Two years later, Henry landed in Wales with a small force and on the 22nd August 1485, he confronted the Royal army near Market Bosworth in Leicestershire.

Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Richard III at Bosworth Ref: RB-30

Graham Turner's latest painting of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth is the result of many years of research and consideration, and incorporates the latest knowledge about the king's appearance made possible by the dramatic discovery of his remains in Leicester lin 2012.

King Richard is shown dressed in gilded armour, befitting a monarch demonstrating his right to wear the crown of England as God's anointed ruler, his surcoat and horse caparison bearing the Royal Arms and his Standard fluttering above him. His trusted companion, Sir Robert Percy, points out Henry Tudor amongst the enemy host, prompting the King to make the decision to lead his household knights and retainers in their thundering charge towards the challenger to his throne.

Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth, Wars of the Roses - Medieval Art print by Graham Turner The Battle of Bosworth - King Richard III's Charge Ref: BOS-38

With the two armies locked together in fierce hand to hand combat, Henry Tudor, surrounded by only a small body of men, becomes isolated from his main force. Seeing a chance to end the battle with one decisive stroke, King Richard III leads his household knights and retainers in a thunderous charge, seeking out his adversary.

Graham Turner's dramatic painting transports the viewer into the thick of the action, You can feel the shattering impact of the King's lance on the unfortunate Sir William Brandon, as Tudor's Red Dragon Standard falls to the ground. To the left, Sir John Cheyney spurs his horse on to challange the King and Henry Tudor's mount rears up, startled by the deafening noise of battle. However, the hitherto uncommitted forces of Sir William Stanley can be seen approaching and their intervention on Tudor's side leads to the defeat and death of Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, and the succession of Henry Tudor as Henry VII.

Richard III at Bosworth - print from a painting by Graham Turner Richard III Fights for his Crown Ref: Gic-G335

Having killed Henry Tudor's standard bearer and felled Sir John Cheyney, King Richard III wields his battle-axe against some of Sir William Stanley's red-jacketed retainers. Behind the king, knights of his household who charged into the fray alongside him struggle to get near Henry Tudor - the banners of Sir James Harrington and Sir Robert Percy can be identified, and Sir Richard Ratcliffe is seen being pulled from his horse.

To the right Rhys ap Thomas approaches, and Rhys Fawr ap Maredudd picks up the fallen red dragon standard - and behind them Henry Tudor himself can be seen, surrounded by his bodyguard and provocatively displaying the royal arms alongside banners of St George and the Dun Cow of Warwick.
