THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH - 22nd August 1485

When Richard III succeeded his brother, Edward IV, in 1483, he found his throne threatened by the Lancastrian Henry Tudor, who was then exiled in France. Two years later, Henry landed in Wales with a small force and on the 22nd August 1485, he confronted the Royal army near Market Bosworth in Leicestershire.

Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth, Wars of the Roses - Medieval Art print by Graham TurnerThe Battle of Bosworth - King Richard III's Charge Ref: BOS-38

With the two armies locked together in fierce hand to hand combat, Henry Tudor, surrounded by only a small body of men, becomes isolated from his main force. Seeing a chance to end the battle with one decisive stroke, King Richard III leads his household knights and retainers in a thunderous charge, seeking out his adversary.

Graham Turner's dramatic painting transports the viewer into the thick of the action, You can feel the shattering impact of the King's lance on the unfortunate Sir William Brandon, as Tudor's Red Dragon Standard falls to the ground. To the left, Sir John Cheyney spurs his horse on to challange the King and Henry Tudor's mount rears up, startled by the deafening noise of battle. However, the hitherto uncommitted forces of Sir William Stanley can be seen approaching and their intervention on Tudor's side leads to the defeat and death of Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, and the succession of Henry Tudor as Henry VII.

The Medieval Art of Graham Turner

The Wars of the Roses

The series of battles fought between the rival Yorkist and Lancastrian claiments to the English throne during the second half of the 15th century are now known as the Wars of the Roses, after badges carried by supporters of the two factions - the white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster.

Political tensions erupted into open conflict at the first battle of ST.ALBANS in 1455, when the Duke of York took up arms against the Lancastrian King Henry VI, and this battle is one of several that Graham Turner has brought to life in his series of paintings devoted to this turbulent period in our history. WAKEFIELD, TOWTON, NORTHAMPTON, BARNET, TEWKESBURY, and BOSWORTH - where Henry Tudor defeated Richard III - these are some of the other battles that have been painted by this highly regarded historical artist who specialises in medieval history, all of which are available as prints from Studio 88.
