The Siege of Bamburgh Castle, 1464 - Print from a painting by Graham Turner The Siege of Bamburgh Castle Ref: Gic-G344

The battle for control of the mighty fortresses of Northumberland had seen them change hands repeatedly in the early 1460s, but by June 1464 Bamburgh was the last to remain holding out for Henry VI. Terms for the defenders' surrender were delivered by the earl of Warwick's herald; when these were rejected, King Edward's siege artillery was brought into action, causing considerable damage as the great guns pounded the walls. From behind the siege-lines, Warwick's herald witnesses the power of this formidable bombardment as one of Bamburgh's towers comes crashing down.
