Sir Edmund Verney with the Royal Standard at Edgehill - Painting by Graham Turner The Capture of the Royal Standard Ref: Gic-G266

Sir Edmund Verney, Knight Marshal of the King's Palace, bearing the Royal Standard in the thick of the fight at Edgehill. Verney's loyalties were torn between his duty and conscience, so he served his king but declined to bear arms - he 'nither put on armes or buffe cote' - even though he knew it would no doubt cost him his life.

Sir Edmund's body was never found, only his hand hacked off as it grasped the standard pole. A ring, with a miniature portrait of Charles I, identified the hand and was returned to his family.
