Painting of a De Havilland Mosquito by Graham Turner from Osprey book Normandy 1944 Pathfinder over Trappes Ref: GT54A

De Havilland Mosquito B. XVI, serial ML957, of 109 Squadron, 8 (Pathfinder) Group, flown by Flying Officer A.A. Dray and Flight Lieutenant W.G. Finlay, flies over the railway centre at Trappes, south-west of Paris, on the night of 6-7 March 1944, having dropped target indicators to guide the second wave of Halifax bombers from Nos. 4 and 6 Groups onto the target.

The 105 Squadron record book stated, 'all the marking aircraft were successful, and the heavies… reported the TIs (Target Indicators) as being well concentrated and very accurate. The yards were clearly seen in the bright moonlight and the absence of cloud made the TIs plainly visible. The bombing, especially in the second phase, was extremely accurate and most of the bombs were seen to fall right across the markers.'

Painting of a P-47 Thunderbolt by Graham Turner from Osprey book Normandy 1944 Hell Hawks! Ref: GT54B
The railway bridge over the River Seine at Vernon, 7th May 1944.

With one bomb failing to release, the P-47 Thunderbolt 'The Madam' of 1st Lt. John Feltzer is caught in the blast from the bombs dropped by Captain Arlo Henry's preceding Thunderbolt. Showered with masonry and thrown over the bridge, Fetzer managed to regain control of his badly damaged aircraft, jettison the bomb, and return home, where 'The Madam' would receive new wings, tail, engine and supercharger, before going on to fly to the end of the war.

The 'Transportation Plan' to cut D-Day communications

by Julian Hale

Includes three paintings by Graham Turner G.Av.A.

From the publisher's website:
As the invasion of Europe grew closer, thought was given to how to use the Allies' substantial forces of heavy bombers in preparation. After much controversy, the plan eventually adopted was the 'Transportation Plan', in which the railway and road networks of France (and hence the German logistical chain) were targeted in order to slow German reinforcements to the Normandy beachhead both before and during the Allied invasion.

In this book, aviation researcher Julian Hale draws on new archive research to explain how this crucial, dangerous and often spectacular campaign was fought. Running from April to July 1944, it would eventually involve heavy and medium bombers of both the RAF and USAAF, with a starring role for the fighter-bombers of the Ninth Air Force. Early attacks by strategic bombers on the French rail nodes were only partially successful at best. In mid-May, the decision was taken to attack bridges and road and rail traffic intensively using fighter-bombers, mainly drawn from the US Ninth.

Illustrated with carefully chosen photos, spectacular battlescene artwork and explanatory maps and 3D diagrams, this is the story of how Allied airpower paved the way for D-Day.
