Lord Falkland at the Battle of Newbury, 1643 - Print from a painting by Graham Turner Lord Falkland at Newbury Ref: Gic-G391

Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland, riding as a civilian volunteer and looking to be in the thick of the action at the Battle of Newbury on 20th September 1643, had attached himself to Byron's unit but the only way into the field giving a clear run for a cavalry charge against the parliamentarians on Round Hill was through a narrow gap or gateway, which was clearly the focus of all the parliamentary fire. Byron commanded the gap to be widened with a view to mounting a substantial cavalry charge out towards the enemy position but whether Lord Falkland had not heard or not realised the reason for the delay - or simply was too anxious or headstrong to hold back, as Byron later wrote in his journal, 'My Lord Falkland, more gallantly than advisedly, spurred his horse through the gap and were straightway cut down by bullets'.
