The Paduan line starts to crack in the face of the ferocious Veronese assault, led by Ostasio de Polenta, resplendent in his crested great helm. At the front of the Paduan defense is Francesco Novello da Carrara, a member of one of the most powerful Italian families.

As the bulk of his contingent hits the flank of the Veronese left, Sir John Hawkwood leads a small mounted unit against the Della Scala banners, pulling the Veronese standard bearer Francesco Visconti from his saddle.

The savage final act to the battle of Castagnaro sees the remaining Veronese foot being cut down by the Paduan infantry, their commander Francesco Novello da Carrara in the foreground. In the background, Veronese militiamen attempt to flee the carnage by climbing the levee, many of them meeting their end in the waters of the River Adige.
