'And after the marriage, on the way back, there was a great division between Thomas Percy Lord Egremont and the said earl (Salisbury), near York. It was the beginning of the greatest sorrow in England.' William Worcester, Annales Rerum Anglicarum
Heworth Moor, 1453 - painting by Graham Turner Confrontation on Heworth Moor - original painting Ref: GT-HWM

Tensions between the rival Percy and Neville families come to a head on 24 August 1453, when, returning to Sheriff Hutton from the wedding of Thomas Neville and Maud Stanhope in Lincolnshire, the Nevilles find their route blocked by Thomas Percy, Lord Egremont, with a large force of men, on Heworth Moor to the east of York.

Behind them, beyond the large expanse of the King's Fishpool, York Minster towers over the walled city, and the Layerthorpe Bridge crosses the river Foss near St Cuthbert's Church.

Original gouache painting by Graham Turner - image size 18.7"x 13" (48cm x 33cm) Note: When framed with a mount, the overall picture size will be larger. Painting is priced unframed.
