Blackheath, 2nd March 1452.

Following a tense military standoff and lengthy negotiations, the Duke of York kneels before Henry VI to present his petition, only to find his arch-rival the Duke of Somerset standing beside the king, despite assurances to the contrary.

With York are the Earl of Devon and Lord Cobham, the only peers to offer their support.

The London Chronicle reports the scene:

'And furthwith the duke sent his men home ageyne, and he mekely came and submitted himself at the Blak heth to the kyng, his adversaries there standing present, contrary to thappointment'.
