Second World War Military Art by Graham Turner - Landing Craft off Walcheren WW2 Painting Landing Craft off Walcheren Ref: GT-W1

Approaching Westkapelle's White Beach about 1000hrs on D-Day, 1 November 1944, an LCT (Landing Craft Tank) of the second wave passes a hard-hit support craft.

LCG(M) 101 was one of two support craft purposely designed to engage German beach defences at point-blank range with the 17-pdr anti-tank guns mounted in their two offset turrets. All of the shells fired by LCG(M) 101's Royal Marine gun detachments hit their target, but, immobilized on the hostile shore, the craft made easy targets themselves for the defenders. LCG(M) 102 was lost with all 41 hands, but LCG(M) 101 retracted from the beach using her kedge anchor before sinking half a mile offshore. Remarkably only two of her crew were lost.

Here, men of 41 (RM) Commando watch the drama unfold from the bow of their LCT as it heads towards the beach. The crew of the sinking LCG can be seen unrolling a life raft and bringing the wounded up on deck.
