Battle of the Aces Battle of the Aces Ref: Gic-M221

Leutnant Werner Voss in his Focker Triplane fights for his life against a patrol of SE5As from 56 Squadron, RFC, on 23rd September 1917. Voss was Germany's second highest scoring ace, with forty-eight victories, but in this combat all his opponents were aces, and he was to fall victim to one of them, Lieutenant A.P.F. Rhys-Davies. The nearest SE5A in Michael Turner's painting is that flown by the leader of the British flight, Captain James McCudden.
